✨ AI Suggestion

Select text in your document, then click a button. Press Tab in the editor to accept. Ctrl+Z undoes it.

Your AI suggestion will appear here…

💡 Idea & Feasibility

Before you commit to a topic, talk it through here. Describe what you want to study and what you actually have available — the advisor below judges whether it's realistic, not just whether it's interesting.

This gives an honest outside read on your idea, not approval — the AI can be wrong, and a real supervisor's judgment still matters most. Once the plan feels solid, head to the Research tab next to find a research gap and ground it in real literature.

🧰 Research helpers

Select the text you want analyzed (or leave nothing selected to use the whole document).

Paste raw SPSS / JASP / R output and use Format results in APA to get correct APA 7th reporting.

📄 Analyse a paper

Give Appuscholer a research paper and learn to read it. Ask your own questions, or let it walk you through the paper stage by stage: the gap, the design, the sample, the statistics, the limits. Each answer comes with quotations from the paper, and the app checks that every quotation really is in the paper.

Short talks on reading papers, statistics, scales, study design, writing and ethics. No paper needed.
📊 My paper cards side by side

⚖ Design & Ethics

Plan your method, pick the right regulatory path, and prepare consent, ethics committee and registration paperwork before data collection starts. Everything below is a starting checklist, not a legal ruling — confirm the final requirement with your own institution's Ethics Committee.

📊 Statistics Lab

Paste your data, pick a test, get real computed results — t, F, χ², r, p, effect sizes — plus an APA-ready sentence. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

📈 Charts

Make a bar/line chart from your own numbers, or a 2- or 3-circle Venn diagram — then drop it straight into your document.

🏷 Qualitative Coding

Select a passage in your document, then tap a code below to tag it. Build codes under other codes to group related ideas. Works across every document you have, not just the one that's open.

No codes yet — add one above, then select text in your document and tap it to tag that passage.

🔍 Closeness check

Compares the document you are writing with texts you already hold: papers on your Reading shelf, your other documents, and any passage you paste in. It marks every run of words that matches a source word for word, and says where. Everything happens in this browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, and no AI is used.

What it cannot do. It sees only the sources you tick or paste. It does not search the web, books or journals you have not loaded, and it cannot see an idea copied in new words. Use it to catch a paraphrase that hugs a paper you read. It is not a plagiarism verdict, and it is not a similarity report for your institution.

📖 Words and grammar

Look up a word and keep the ones you want to learn, then check your writing for common slips. Nothing changes in your document unless you press Apply.

Dictionary
My word bank
Grammar check

Checks the text you have selected, or the whole document if nothing is selected. The rules are free and instant. The AI check sends the text to your AI provider and reads the first 9,000 characters.

✍ My Writing Style

Teach Appuscholar to write like YOU. Upload your files — Word, PDF or text.

Only your own writing

Use text you wrote yourself, without AI and without copying. A published paper by someone else will teach the app their voice, not yours, and passing it off as your style is misuse. Your declaration is saved here and appears in your AI-use statement.

Check that the samples are yours: a short typed paraphrase

Read the passage, then write it again in your own words in the box. Pasting is switched off. The app compares your typing with your samples on four habits. It is a rough check, and it cannot prove who wrote anything.

Vocabulary check: ten words

Choose the meaning of each word, or "I do not know". Ten words give only a rough level. The level keeps suggestions to words you are likely to know. Technical terms of your field stay.

Does it sound like me?

The app writes the practice passage in your learned voice. Judge it.

📚 Citation Manager

Add a source, then insert citations as you write.

A Hindi source is quoted as written. An English source is translated automatically when your content language is set to Hindi, and marked (अनुवादित) with the original kept on hover.

🔖 One-click capture from any page

Like Zotero's browser button — drag this link to your bookmarks bar once. Then, on any journal article, PubMed or arXiv page, click it to send that page's citation straight into your library here.

🔖 Capture to Appuscholar

Drag — don't click — the button above onto your bookmarks bar. It only reads standard citation tags already on the page (the same ones Zotero and Mendeley use); it can't read pages that don't publish them, like most news sites.

🗂 My library 0

🤝 Class sharing: export your library and share the file with classmates — import theirs to build one shared collection. Your documents and writing style stay on your own device.

🔬 Research

Search OpenAlex and PubMed live, free, no install — pick what's relevant, then draft a literature review or find a research gap, grounded only in the abstracts you found.

🎯 Narrow my topic

A topic that is too broad gives thousands of papers and no clear gap. Check how crowded yours is, pick a sub-topic, or let the helper ask you the questions a supervisor would.

Filter these results
Filters only hide papers from view; nothing is deleted. The last two use the Quick read, so a paper you have not quick-read yet is hidden while either is set, and a field the Quick read could not confirm counts as unknown. PubMed results carry no open-access flag, so the open-access filter hides them. Citation count and sample size do not measure the quality of a study.
🌐 Not finding it? Search Google Scholar and others directly

Google Scholar, JSTOR and most publisher sites don't allow apps like this one to fetch results automatically — they have to be searched in your browser. These open a new tab with your topic already typed in.

➕ Add a paper you found elsewhere

Found something on Google Scholar or a journal site? Enter its details here to drop it straight into your Citation Manager library.

🔗 Connected papers

Pick one OpenAlex paper above and see what it cites and what has cited it — a quick way to trace a research thread.

💬 Ask Appuscholar

Your purple study buddy — ask anything about your writing. Each reply has an "Insert into document" button.

🖥 Make a PPT from this document

Uses your Heading 1 / Heading 2 styles as slide breaks — the text under each heading becomes bullet points, and any picture becomes its own slide. Add headings in the formatting bar above if you haven't yet.

💾 Save as research project

Projects track which stage a piece of work is at, so the app can point you to the right tools. Nothing you've written moves or changes — this just labels it.

Guessed from the tool you had open — change it if that's wrong.

📁 Your research projects

Your project has six stages

The app follows you through them in order. Every tool stays one click away the whole time — this is just the shape of the road ahead.

⏳ Free AI limit reached

Whose writing is this?

A paper by someone else is kept as a source. It is not counted as your writing, not used to learn your style and not shown in "% yours". You can change this later with the 📄 button.

📊 My writing

Where the words in your documents came from. It counts text typed in this editor against text inserted from an AI suggestion or the chat. It cannot see your thinking, and text you retype from an AI answer counts as yours. No targets, no score. It is just a mirror.

👋 Welcome back

Answer in your own words. Nobody grades these, and the app does not read them. They are saved on this computer so you can see how your thinking moved.

🎙 Mock viva

🎓 Viva question

The AI asks one question an examiner might ask about the passage you selected (or the end of your document). Answer from your own head. There is no AI help in the answer box, because the point is to rehearse the real moment.

🔑 Choose your AI provider

Pick one. Your key is saved in this browser and sent only to the provider you choose.

Don't have one? Get a free ORCID iD →

The core tools (writing, statistics, citations, research) work for any field. A specialty pack adds field-specific tools on top. More packs are planned.

This is the language the AI writes in — your paper, explanations, stats write-ups — separate from the interface language toggle above. Saved with the open project, or as your default when no project is open.

Paper search uses OpenAlex. Without a key it has a small free daily allowance, and a heavy day can use it up. A free key from openalex.org (Settings, API) gives ten times more. The key stays on this computer and is left out of backups.

The AI uses this to pitch explanations and examples at your field. Psychology has the most tools built in; the others are being added.

Appuscholar privately saves a copy of your own writing from each document on this computer — whatever you typed yourself, skipping anything an AI suggestion inserted. Nothing is uploaded anywhere. The idea is a future tool that learns to write in your own voice from this. Turn off any time; your documents themselves are never affected either way.

The text of that one request then goes to the other provider you saved a key for, and a message tells you which one answered. Switch this off if you want every request to stay with one provider.

Back up your work

Your documents, citations and projects live only in this browser. Clearing the browser data erases them. Download a backup file now and then, and keep it somewhere safe. It never contains your AI key or access code.

If you lose this phone or computer

⚠ Because this app runs as a local file, every HTML file on your computer shares one storage area. A key saved with Remember on this computer can be read by any other HTML file you open. The passphrase option encrypts it so those files see only scrambled text.

📚 Reading shelf

Add PDFs you have the right to read. Appuscholar reads each one in your browser and keeps only the extracted text, on this computer. The PDF file itself is not stored and nothing is uploaded. Scanned PDFs without a text layer cannot be read.

📋 Scale library

Published scales with the owner's own wording. The text is fixed and never rewritten by the AI, because a reworded item is no longer the validated item. Each scale shows its licence record. Check that the terms fit your use before you put a scale in a study.

📖 Guide

The guide is in English for now. A Hindi version is planned.

Appu answers only from this guide. It cannot see your documents or data. Your question goes to your AI provider, so leave out participant details.

🛠 Report a problem

Describe what you were doing and what went wrong. Do not type participant names or other personal details.

What the app adds to the report. This is everything. Nothing from your documents, sources, data or keys is included.

💜 Welcome to Appuscholar

A writing and research assistant, with psychology research support built in. Everything you write stays on this computer.

  1. Click ⚙ AI Provider / Key at the top right.
  2. Pick Google Gemini or Groq — both have a free tier.
  3. Follow the link, create a key, paste it in, press Save Key.

❓ Help & Troubleshooting

Most problems have a quick fix below. Check here first — it's faster than waiting on an email.

🔑 My access code won't work

Paste the whole code, including the dot in the middle, with no extra spaces or line breaks — copying from some apps adds a stray character at the start or end. Codes also expire; if the date has passed, you'll need a fresh one from whoever gave you Appuscholar.

🔌 My AI key stopped working, or I lost it

Open ⚙ AI Provider / Key at the top right, pick your provider again, and follow the link to generate a new one — it's free and takes under a minute. Your key lives only in this browser; nothing to recover from a server.

💾 My work disappeared after closing the tab or clearing my browser

Everything is saved only in this browser, on this computer — never on a server. Clearing site data, switching browsers, or moving to a new computer wipes it with no way back. Use ⬇ Download in the document toolbar regularly to keep a copy outside the browser.

🖥 The page looks broken, or won't load properly

Try a hard refresh — Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on a Mac — or open it in Chrome or Edge if you're on something else. Both render this app best.

हि Something stayed in English after switching to Hindi

A few things stay in English on purpose — statistical test names, citation style names (APA, MLA), and the external AI-provider sign-up pages — since those are the exact terms you'll meet everywhere else too. Anything other than that is a genuine bug worth reporting below.

Still stuck? Tell us what happened and we'll help directly.

A direct contact option isn't set up yet — for now, reach whoever gave you Appuscholar.

🔑 Appuscholar Access

This copy needs an access code. Paste the code you were given below — it's checked on this computer, nothing is uploaded.

Don't have a code, or has yours expired? Ask whoever gave you Appuscholar for a new one.

📊 Statistics Lab

Paste data from Excel, SPSS, Google Sheets or a CSV file — first row = column names. Everything is computed on this computer; your data is never sent anywhere unless you tap "Explain in plain language" below, and even then only the computed numbers are sent, not your raw data.

1Your data

Results you insert are tagged with this name. If you later load changed data under the same name, the tagged results in your document are flagged as out of date.

📐 These formulas cover the common cases correctly (Welch's independent t, average-rank non-parametric tests, standard ANOVA/chi-square). For an unusual design, or before a dissertation defense, cross-check against SPSS or JASP.

🔗 Results and data

📈 Research figures

Paste your data (first row = column names) or use the data from the Statistics Lab. Pick a chart. Every chart is drawn on this computer and can be saved for your paper.

🎯 Sample size and power

How many people does the study need, how much power does a given sample have, or what is the smallest effect a given sample can detect. Everything is computed here from the exact noncentral distributions; nothing is uploaded.

🎓 Learn: watch power happen (SIMULATED)

Run a few hundred pretend studies of the same size on a computer and see how many of them find a real effect. Everything here is SIMULATED. No real people, no data file, and nothing here can be copied into a study. It exists to show why a small study misses real effects and why the studies that do find it overstate it.

Two groups of equal size. The true difference between them is the effect size d you choose. Each pretend study draws new people and runs an independent-samples t-test at alpha .05, two-tailed.

📊 Quick chart

Bar, grouped, stacked, line, scatter, pie and Venn charts from your own numbers. Insert the chart straight into your document as a picture. For charts drawn from a data file (box plots, histograms, error bars), use Chart Studio in the Statistics Lab.

🏷 Coded passages

Every passage tagged with this code, across all your documents.

🧭 Regulatory-pathway wizard

Answer four questions and get a starting list of which approvals usually apply in India. This is a checklist to walk in with, not a ruling — your institution's Ethics Committee has the final word.

📄 Protocol / synopsis builder

Fill in each section in your own words. "Generate" assembles them into one structured document you can drop straight into your document editor, or hand to a funder or your EC.

🛡 Ethics Committee package + consent form

The documents an EC typically asks for, and a generator for the informed consent form itself. Check a box as each document is ready.

Your ethics approval record

Write down what your committee decided. Appuscholar never decides it for you.

Generate an informed consent form

🤖 AI-use statement

Many universities and journals now ask you to say where AI helped. Appuscholar keeps a private log in this browser: the date, the AI provider, the model and the kind of help. It never keeps what you typed or what the AI answered. Build your statement from it below.

Pick the dates that match this piece of work. Untick any kind of help that belongs to another project.

What you did yourself

Tick only what is true.

The log covers only this browser on this computer. If you used Appuscholar elsewhere, or with the log off, add it in the box above. Your institution or the journal decides what you must disclose. AI cannot be listed as an author.

📝 CTRI registration readiness

CTRI (Clinical Trials Registry – India) asks for a fixed set of fields. Tick off what's ready — this doesn't submit anything, it just gets you ready to fill CTRI's own form without hunting for a missing piece halfway through.

🎓 PI eligibility & training readiness

What most ECs expect from a Principal Investigator before they'll approve a trial. Free GCP training: ICMR's own NOC/GCP course, or WHO's GCP course — search "WHO Global Health Learning GCP"; both are free and widely accepted.

💰 Trial budget estimator

A line-item estimate to share with a potential funder or your department. Numbers only — this doesn't move or hold any real money.
